In 2003 Michael Cretu steered Enigma into a new musical direction and aptly described the genre of the fifth album "Voyageur“ as "sophisticated pop". "ENIGMA is an experimental project on a pop music basis“, says the mastermind, at the same time implying that he has created something completely new.

The intoxicating electronic ambience of this album goes beyond popular music standards - this album has a far edgier rhythm - it is a leap into a different world.  And Michael has acted on this maxim since the inception of the Enigma project: “If I hate anything, it’s copying myself.”

The first single release also titled "Voyageur", is an intriguing and fascinating listening experience. This is what Cretu refers to as "harmonious monotony“. And this burst of innovation also announced a new era of contemporary pop music. The pure and uplifting second single “Following The Sun” is the polar opposite of the first single – and it is the simple profundity that makes this song a unique masterpiece. Ruth Ann’s hypnotic vocals complement the expressive power of the composition and this ultimately lets the listener envisage and mentally experience the sensation of “following the sun”.

“Voyageur” is the fifth of the seven Engima albums released to date: “MCMXC a.D.”, “The Cross of Changes”, “Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!”, “The Screen Behind the Mirror”, “A Posteriori” and “Seven Lives Many Faces”.

"I know that some of my real fans will disagree, but I think "Voyageur" was a very important step in ENIGMA's life. I always said: I just to do, what I want to do in a certain period of my life. Don't ask me, why, but I wanted to make a sophisticated pop album. That means: the basis of the songs are very simple children melodies, but sophisticated arranged in the spirit of ENIGMA.



I got this idea of an album called "Tug Of War" from Paul Mc Cartney. I never understood, what a hell is this intention with this solo album, till I realized, he just wanted to express himself. He can interpret songs, doesn't matter which style of music it is.
When I did the album, I had this in the back of my mind. I wanted to cover different kinds of pop music, but arrange it in my strange way.

That was the intention. Some people understood it, some not - that's the destiny of an artist."
