Biography
From Classical Training to Electronic Music Production
Trained as a classical pianist and conductor, Michael Cretu began his career as a studio musician and arranger, working with acts such as Frank Farian’s Boney M. He soon moved into production, receiving his first Gold Award as producer at the age of 23 for Austrian singer-songwriter Peter Cornelius. A series of productions for international artists followed, including Mike Oldfield, Andru Donalds, and Sandra, marking his commercial breakthrough and establishing his reputation as a multi-Platinum record producer on the international stage.
In 1990, Cretu invented Enigma. The debut album MCMXC a.D. became one of the defining electronic releases of the decade, leading to the Most Successful Virgin Act award in 1991 and, in 2002, the World Music Award for Best-Selling German Artist. Seven further studio albums have followed, extending a project that continues to this day.

Alchemist in Sound
Michael Cretu approaches Enigma as a layered, collage-based, genre-permeable work, one in which voices, instruments, and sounds intersect. He builds epic sonic landscapes from a small but carefully selected palette, shaped to carry warmth and emotion.
His working principle is independence. And often solitude. Writing, arranging, producing, engineering, and performing all take place within the same pair of hands. This allows feelings, ideas, and intuitions to move from imagination to recording without any filters in between.
The objective underneath is to come as close to sonic perfection as possible, an approach that has earned him the description Alchemist in Sound.

Cretu’s work has always been tied to a specific idea of what a studio should be: compact, digital-first, and state-of-the-art. Since the beginning, he has developed successive generations of customised recording environments built to strip away what isn’t needed and refine what is.
The guiding principle is reduced to the max. Every component of the setup is selected, configured, or purpose-built for his specific way of working. Nothing is there by default.
One of the most important elements is the monitoring system, custom-designed for him by ADAM Audio, a one-of-a-kind configuration built to his exact specifications.
